Destination: Tungnath Temple, Chopta, Uttarakhand Elevation: 3,680 meters (12,073 feet) Best Time to Visit: April to November Duration: 3 to 5 days (depending on your itinerary and pace)
Itinerary
Your journey to Tungnath begins with a scenic drive to Chopta, a quaint hill station in Uttarakhand, often referred to as the "Mini Switzerland of India." The drive itself is an experience, winding through dense forests, charming villages, and offering breathtaking views of the Himalayan range.
Starting Point: Rishikesh/Haridwar/Dehradun (as per your travel plan).
Drive Time: Approximately 7-8 hours from Rishikesh to Chopta.
Upon arrival in Chopta, you can spend the evening acclimatizing and enjoying the serene environment. The cool breeze, chirping of birds, and a panoramic view of the snow-capped peaks make for a perfect setting to unwind. Stay overnight in a camp or guesthouse.
The next day, after a hearty breakfast, you embark on the trek to Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world. The trek is about 3.5 kilometers and takes around 3-4 hours depending on your pace.
Trek Distance: 3.5 km (one way)
Trek Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Elevation Gain: From 2,680 meters (Chopta) to 3,680 meters (Tungnath)
The trail is well-paved and passes through lush green meadows, rhododendron forests, and offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba. As you ascend, the temple comes into view, its ancient stone architecture standing in stark contrast to the pristine natural beauty around it.
Upon reaching the temple, take some time to offer prayers and soak in the spiritual ambiance of this sacred site. The temple is said to be over 1,000 years old and is part of the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit.
If you're feeling adventurous, continue the trek for another 1.5 kilometers to Chandrashila Peak, which stands at an elevation of 4,000 meters. The view from the peak is nothing short of spectacular, with a 360-degree panorama of the Himalayas.
After spending some time at the peak, you will trek back down to Chopta. The descent is much quicker and allows you to revisit the beautiful landscapes with a new perspective.
ay 3: Return Journey
On the third day, you can either spend more time exploring Chopta or begin your return journey to Rishikesh, Haridwar, or Dehradun. If you have more days to spare, consider visiting nearby attractions like Deoria Tal or taking a detour to Auli, a popular ski destination.
